MARCExplorer searches and retrieves MARC records by ISBN# (either single or batch) from the Library of Congress and many other Z39.50 MARC record catalogs via your Internet browser from any Internet accessible computer. Users choose either a quick search with preselected library catalogs in four categories: Education, Law, Business or Medical or Selected search choosing from the entire list of available libraries. MARC records are saved into a single file to a user-designated drive for access by any MARC record import utility.

FEATURES

Use MARCExplorer to search, retrieve and save an unlimited number of free MARC records from any computer with Internet access 24/7. MARC records are the most complete view of the catalog record therefore importing the MARC record makes the inputting of data both easy and accurate. MARCExplorer searches for MARC records by ISBN number at not only the Library of Congress website but many other Z39.50 MARC record Internet libraries right from your Internet browser. There is no software to install, no software upgrades to worry about. Just point your browser to the MARCExplorer web address, enter your pin# and begin searching for MARC records. Easy...efficient...effective library cateloging is only a mouse click away. MARCExplorer offers two types of searching: Quick Preselected Search or User Selected Search.

Quick Preselected or User Selected Search

A Quick Preselected Search allows the user to choose from among the four categories: Education, Law, Business or Medical each of which has 4 preselected libraries to search for MARC records by ISBN number (either batch or single). Each category has the Library of Congress as one of the choices and additionally 3 other libraries chosen from the top 100 libraries in the field for their expertise as well as their number of successful "hits" when used for MARC record searching. The Library of Congress has an extensive collection (well over 12 million) free MARC records available and as such it is always one of the collections chosen for a preselected search.

To initiate a quick search simply choose the category for the search, key in the single ISBN# or browse to the path of the batch file of ISBN#s, click the Process button and the search is underway! Moments later the ISBN#s are found and a report shows the records that were found and at which library locations. Click Download to download and save the retreived records. The saved MARC records can then be imported into any library management software program capable of importing MARC records in MARC format.

When User Selected Search is chosen the user can customize the search by choosing which libraries will be searched from the entire list of available libraries. Once the ISBN number(s) are provided the Process button initiates the search. Momentarily, when the search is completed, the retrieved records can then be downloaded saved for later import.

Auto Librarian users: Auto Librarian™ SE Library Server or Server V.4 when used in conjunction with the MARC/AL™ Interface Utility V.4 for SE/V.4. can import the saved MARC records which have been downloaded using the MARCExplorer Utility. The MARC/AL™ Interface Utility V.4 for SE/V.4 converts the MARC records to an Auto Librarian record and sends the records to the Auto Librarian database leaving the MARC record intact.

Non-Auto Librarian users: Use your library management software's MARC record import utility or feature to import the saved MARC records into your library database.

MARCExplorer works in conjunction with Auto Librarian™ SE Library Server or Library Server V.4 and MARC/AL™ Interface Utility V.4 for SE/V.4 as well as other MARC record importing programs and library databases.
